🌱 Discovering Lisa’s Legacy Farm in Sankandi

During my January 2025 visit to The Gambia, I took a detour from nursery schools and building projects to step into the world of farming! I travelled to Lisa’s Legacy Farm in the village of Sankandi. However, this time, I wasn’t accompanied by BFiG Busumbala Nursery School Manager and taxi driver extraordinaire Lamin Barrow. I was visiting with…Lamin Barrow, the farmer! 🚜💚

🌾 Lamin the Multi-Talented Gambian Hero

During the rainy season, Lamin swaps traffic jams for rice fields and peanut plants. Most of his time is spent right here in Sankandi, growing crops that help sustain both his family and the wider community. Seeing him in his element, planting, digging and smiling his way through the day, was a real treat.

Who knew our school manager could handle the soil just as well as he handles school projects? (Actually, we suspected he could!) 😄

🌳 What Is Lisa’s Legacy Farm?

Lisa’s Legacy Farm is a community-driven agricultural project rooted in love, memory and empowerment. Set up to honour the life of Grandmother Lisa, the farm focuses on:

🌱 Sustainable farming
🌳 Planting and nurturing tree saplings
🍚 Cultivating essential crops
🙌 Strengthening the local community in Sankandi

Furthermore, It’s all about protecting the land, feeding local families and giving back to a village that shaped generations.

👏 A Family Legacy with Community Spirit

The project is privately funded and run by Lamin Darboe. Lamin now lives in England but has strong family ties to Sankandi. Inspired by his grandmother, Lamin set up the farm to help his home community thrive. Back in The Gambia, the project is managed by his brother — our hardworking farmer-manager, Lamin Barrow.

Consequently, it’s a beautiful example of how a single family’s commitment can inspire and empower an entire village.
