The quarrying process involves breaking the laterite into smaller pieces, which are then sieved to separate stone and sand. The sand is often used to make building blocks12.
Working conditions at Bafoloto Quarry are quite challenging. Both men and women work long hours in difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions. The work is physically demanding and can be life-threatening, with several workers having lost their lives over the years2.
Despite the hardships, the quarry plays a crucial role in the local economy, providing materials for road and house construction. Additionally, a layer of clay found deep underground is quarried and sold as a traditional medicine2.
